Current Research Project

PhD Title: A comparative study of the determining factors of
internationalisation within food and drink SMEs in Wales and Brittany.
Aim: The study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the significant factors that influence and hinder the internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the food and drink industry. A comparative study is being conducted looking at food and drink SMEs in Wales and Brittany in France. These regions were selected because they share a similar cultural identity and have a strong food and drink industry. Brittany is a region of interest to me, having spent 7 years living in Nantes, the historical capital of Brittany.
Impact: The intended outcome of the study is to help facilitate SMEs and governments in the formulation of strategies for international growth in an industry which is significant to both regions. There are several examples of companies in both regions that successfully internationalise, therefore it is necessary to gain an understanding of how this has come about and compare these findings with companies that are not currently involved in selling their products in foreign markets.
Research Process: An online questionnaire has been developed as the main method of data collection for this project, which will be distributed to food and drink producers in both regions. Additionally, the second phase of data collection will involve semi-structured interviews with a random sample of companies that responded to the questionnaire, as well as representatives of organisations offering support to SMEs in internationalisation.
