ENGLISH: Over the past 10 days I have been busy trying to finalise the database of SMEs in both Wales and Brittany that will be used in the study. Having been unable to obtain a list of companies within a realistic budget, it was necessary for me to put together my own database, which has been a time-consuming and rather arduous process involving numerous sources, extensive checking and hours of data entry.
Despite lack of help from established institutions in Wales, putting together a database was relatively straight forward with even the smallest SMEs in Wales having a strong online presence with up-to-date websites and engaging social media accounts. With a number of food festivals being held over the summer period, it was also a chance to see some of these firms in action and sample their products, although in order to avoid possible bias in my study, I refrained from talking about my research, because I was unable to do the same with Breton SMEs.
Developing a Breton database has been much more difficult. For the region which is Europe’s largest in terms of food and drink production, it was surprising that many firms lack a clear presence and finding information about these firms required investigation skills. Not only were the main business institutions of Brittany unwilling to part with information for less than around 2000€, many Breton companies also don’t consider having their own website to be necessary. This was most surprising, given the current business environment and something that might hinder potential international growth. Social media was much less developed in Brittany as it was in Wales with only a few firms having a Twitter account. Despite this, many Breton firms have managed to achieve international success. Hopefully by the end of my research I will be able to find an answer for this.
Another striking difference that emerged from my research into Welsh and Breton SMEs so far is company ownership. Most of the companies I have looked at in Wales are micro-businesses that have been set up in the last 5-10 years. In Brittany many SMEs come under the ownership of larger firms or are members of larger groups. This may aid the smaller firms in developing through sharing knowledge, but this is certainly something to investigate further as part of my study.
Having established the databases, I am currently piloting my survey, with responses so far being rather slow. Hopefully the actual study will attract interest from firms in both regions and that the significance of the study will lead to the good will of participants to complete the survey. I would certainly be grateful for any help that firms can offer me and will be willing to provide a report of the overall findings at the end of the study. If you are willing to participate, please let me know via email at [email protected]
CYMRAEG: Dros y 10 diwrnod diwethaf yr wyf wedi bod yn brysur yn ceisio cwblhau cronfa ddata o BBaCh yng Nghymru a Llydaw i ddefnyddio yn yr astudiaeth. Wedi methu â chael rhestr o gwmnïau o fewn cyllideb realistig, roedd angen i mi wneud cronfa ddata fy hun, sydd wedi bod yn broses hir a llafurus oherwydd y nifer o ffynonellau, gwirio helaeth ac oriau o gofnodi data.
Er gwaethaf y diffyg cymorth gan sefydliadau yng Nghymru, roedd llunio cronfa ddata yn gymharol hawdd gyda hyd yn oed y BBaCh lleiaf yng Nghymru yn dangos presenoldeb ar-lein cryf gyda gwefannau cyfoes a chyfrifon cyfryngau cymdeithasol bywiog. Gyda nifer o wyliau bwyd yn cael eu cynnal dros gyfnod yr haf, roedd cyfle hefyd i weld rhai o'r cwmnïau hyn yn gweithredu, a blasu eu cynnyrch, er fy mod i ddim wedi trafod fy ymchwil er mwyn osgoi bias bosibl yn fy astudiaeth, oherwydd doedden i ddim yn gallu gwneud yr un peth gyda busnesau Llydaweg.
Roedd datblygu cronfa ddata am Lydaw yn llawer mwy anodd. Ar gyfer rhanbarth bwyd a diod fwyaf Ewrop, roedd yn syndod nad oes gan lawer o gwmnïau presenoldeb amlwg ac roedd angen sgiliau ymchwilio da er mwyn dod o hyd i wybodaeth am y cwmnïau hyn. Nid yn unig oedd prif sefydliadau busnes Llydaw yn amharod i rannu gwybodaeth am lai na tua 2000€, hefyd nad oes llawer o gwmnïau o Lydaw yn ystyried cael gwefan eu hunain i fod yn angenrheidiol. Roedd hyn yn fwy o syndod, wrth ystyried yr amgylchedd busnes presennol ac yn rhywbeth a allai lesteirio twf rhyngwladol posibl. Datblygwyd cyfryngau cymdeithasol llawer llai yn Llydaw fel yr oedd yng Nghymru gyda dim ond ychydig o gwmnïau gyda chyfrif Twitter. Er gwaethaf hyn, mae llawer o gwmnïau Llydaw yn llwyddo i gyflawni llwyddiant rhyngwladol. Gobeithio erbyn diwedd fy ymchwil byddwn yn gallu dod o hyd i ateb ar gyfer hyn.
Gwahaniaeth trawiadol arall a ddeilliodd o'r fy ymchwil hyd yma yw perchnogaeth cwmnïau. Mae'r rhan fwyaf o'r cwmnïau dwi wedi ymchwilio yng Nghymru yn ficro-fusnesau sydd wedi eu sefydlu yn y 5-10 mlynedd diwethaf. Yn Llydaw Mae llawer o fusnesau bach a chanolig yn dod o dan berchnogaeth cwmnïau mwy neu yn aelodau o grwpiau mwy o faint. Gallai hyn helpu cwmnïau llai o faint i ddatblygu drwy rannu gwybodaeth, ond mae hyn yn sicr yn rhywbeth i ymchwilio ymhellach fel rhan o fy astudiaeth.
Ar ôl sefydlu cronfeydd data, yr wyf ar hyn o bryd yn treialu fy holiadur, gyda'r ymatebion hyd yma braidd yn araf. Gobeithio bydd yr astudiaeth wirioneddol yn denu diddordeb gan gwmnïau yn y ddau ranbarth a bydd pwysigrwydd yr astudiaeth yn arwain at ewyllys da o gyfranogwyr i gwblhau'r arolwg. Byddwn yn sicr yn ddiolchgar am unrhyw gymorth y gall cwmnïau cynnig imi a byddaf yn barod i ddarparu adroddiad ar y canfyddiadau cyffredinol ar ddiwedd yr astudiaeth. Os ydych yn barod i gymryd rhan, cysylltwch â mi drwy e-bostio [email protected]
